Fortified Iron Gym: Inside Austin's Strongman Gym (Filmed)
By Fit Local Team · Published 2026-09-22 · Updated 2026-09-22
TL;DR: Fortified Iron Gym, at 6025 Wilcab Rd in Austin (78721), is a 24/7, air-conditioned strength gym that puts strongman, powerlifting and bodybuilding under one roof: Atlas stones from 40 to 400 pounds, yokes and a Husafell stone on the ground floor, competition racks and a monolift beside them, and a second floor of machines. No contracts and no sign-up fees, per the gym's own site. We toured it on camera with the owner, Chandler, a couple of months after it opened. The full tour is right below.
From our filmed tour, published August 2026. Watch it, then read what we saw.
Short on time? The two-minute cut is a real training session at Fortified Iron.
What is Fortified Iron Gym?
It is a strength gym built on one argument, and the owner made it on camera. Austin has hardcore gyms with great bars and racks and no air conditioning, and it has commercial gyms with machines and cardio and no specialty equipment. His question was why a lifter should have to choose. His answer was to combine the two.
He calls the place his "love letter" to strength and bodybuilding. The pitch at the door is just as plain: "Doesn't matter who you are, doesn't matter what kind of training style you do, you are welcome here."
The gym's own site says the same thing in its own words: "Whether you're a first-time gym-goer, a seasoned competitor, or somewhere in between, the equipment, the coaches, and the community are here for you."
What strongman equipment does it have?
This is the part most Austin lifters will care about. The owner walked us through the ground floor implement by implement, and this is what the camera saw:
| Strongman implement | What we saw on the tour |
|---|---|
| Atlas stones | A full run, from a 40-pound stone up to 400 pounds |
| Loading platforms | Very tall platforms, 48 to 70 inches; the owner described them as a copy of the ones used at World's Strongest Man in 2024 |
| Yokes | A chain yoke and a regular yoke |
| Carries | Two kinds of farmers handles, a frame, a wheelbarrow |
| Stones and bags | A Husafell stone, sandstones, throwing bags, sandbags from 50 to 400 pounds |
| Overhead | Logs, circus dumbbells, and a power rack tall enough to press inside |
| Odds and ends | A loadable keg, sleds, chains and bands, grip implements, jerk blocks and drop pads |
There is also a 50-foot strip of turf for sled work, and kettlebells in pairs from 8 to 70.
What about powerlifting and bodybuilding?
The powerlifting side sits on the same floor. On the tour: an Eleiko competition platform, six competition racks with their own kilo plate setups, a monolift, two more power racks with platforms, and a wall of specialty bars, including a safety bar, a trap bar, a Duffalo bar and a chambered squat bar.
Upstairs is where the machines live. The owner showed us a 9-foot functional trainer with 250-pound stacks on each side, a self-lift-off bench that converts to a floor press, a pendulum squat, an iso leg press you can run one leg or two, a hack squat and that leg press both set up for bands, a belt squat, a T-bar row, a Viking press, and dumbbells to 180 pounds, with heavier ones on order when we filmed.
That upstairs floor is the point of his argument. It is what the hardcore gyms usually skip.
Hours, access and membership
From the gym's own site, read September 21, 2026:
- Access: 24/7 for members.
- Tours: Monday to Friday, 12 PM to 8 PM; Saturday, 10 AM to 3 PM.
- Commitment: no contracts and no sign-up fees.
- Comfort: climate controlled.
- Where the equipment comes from: "Nearly 100% of the equipment in our gym is made in the USA and, wherever possible, it's made in Texas."
Membership prices are not on the site. Ask on a tour.
Who is it for?
Anyone who wants heavy, specialized equipment without giving up air conditioning and machines. If you compete in strongman or powerlifting, the ground floor is built for you. If you train for size, the upstairs floor is. If you are new, the gym's own line is that you belong there too.
If you want coaching inside Fortified Iron, start with the gym itself: its site lists coaches as part of the offer, so ask about them on your tour, or go to fortifiedirongym.com.
Why we filmed it
Every gym in our guide to the gyms Austin locals actually train at earns its spot the same way: we walked the floor with a camera. Fortified Iron is the strongman chapter. If you liked this one, the Big Tex Gym tour is the other hardcore room we have filmed, and Fogo CrossFit on South Congress is the class-based box.
