Lift ATX: From Schoolteacher to Austin's Most Talked-About Gym

By Fit Local Team · Published 2026-07-24 · Updated 2026-07-24

TL;DR: Lift ATX, the East Austin gym with its own city-proclaimed day, was built by a schoolteacher named Daniel who taught in East Austin for 18 years, saved a $50,000 budget rather than take a loan, and opened on September 1, 2020 in 2,000 square feet shared with a car lot. We sat down with him for 30 minutes on camera. This is that story, and the full interview is right below.

From our filmed interview, published July 2026. Watch it before you read us summarize it.

Eighteen years in East Austin classrooms

Daniel moved to Austin from Corpus Christi around 2000 to attend UT. Through AmeriCorps he landed in an East Austin school at 19 or 20, working with kids whose story looked like his own, and never left education. He taught for 18 years, all of it in East Austin, spending the last stretch as an athletic director and head baseball coach.

The pivot did not come from falling out of love with teaching. It came from burnout, and from a fitness obsession that started during an MBA program in Houston between 2016 and 2018. It was there that a friend dragged him to a mom-and-pop warehouse gym: grimy, old-school equipment, no AC, and a community he calls amazing. Two reactions hit him at once. One, he could do this better. Two, Austin did not have it.

The plan: no loans, no shortcuts

His financing strategy was one sentence: save. He went back to teaching for two more years, 2018 to 2020, and banked everything toward a roughly $50,000 budget. His reasoning, in his own words from the interview: "Try to do it with your own money."

The space he found was not glamorous. Lift ATX opened September 1, 2020 in about 2,000 square feet of an East Austin building, sharing the property with a working car lot. The cardio room doubled as the check-in. The room that is now the powerlifting room was still a mechanic shop.

Growing into the whole building

The expansion happened in stages, and almost did not happen at all. A few months in, the old mechanic shop opened up and became the powerlifting room and turf area. Three years in, the gym had outgrown the space entirely, and Daniel had the lease for a different standalone building in front of him, ready to sign. His landlord asked him to hold out three months. The car lot moved out, and Lift ATX took over the entire building instead.

Ask him about opening a second location and the answer is a firm no. The flagship is home base, he is not done building it out, and he will not stress the staff or the community that made the place work for a franchise dream. The next move is more expansion of the same building, more equipment, and more community events, including the 6-year anniversary celebration coming in September 2026.

A gym as a statement for East Austin

The look of Lift ATX is not an aesthetic accident. Daniel is a former drummer who played music in Austin for 20 years, and the gym doubles as a canvas for local artists he knows personally, including a mural of the powerlifting legend CT Fletcher. His words: he wanted the gym to be a place brown people can be proud of, in a neighborhood that has gentrified around the families who built it.

That intent shows up in harder ways too. His staff get 401(k)s, health insurance, and college reimbursement, benefits he points out are almost unheard of in the gym industry. And in a detail that stuck with us, the City of Austin gave the gym a proclamation dedicating September 30 as Lift ATX Day. The city let him pick the date. He chose his late mother's birthday, a day he had always spent in reflection, so it would carry a celebration instead.

His advice for anyone opening a gym

Condensed from the last third of the interview, in his words where the recording is clean:

  1. "Try to do it with your own money." Save first, own everything.
  2. "Start small, expand over time." Lift ATX wanted 50 members. It got a building.
  3. "You're going to become an expert problem solver. That's all business is." He is still learning daily, six years in.
  4. "Keep your circle small. Don't surround yourself with yes people." He wants critics in the room, not applause.
  5. Stop staring at your metrics. Lean on social media for marketing when the budget is zero, then put the phone down.

And the line the whole gym runs on: "We don't take ourselves too serious, but we take what we do very seriously."
